Watermark Art Center and the Bemidji State University Visual Arts Dept announce the 9th annual It’s Only Clay National Juried Ceramics Competition and Exhibition.
This annual National juried ceramics competition and exhibition is a collaboration sponsored by the BCAC and Bemidji State University. IOC 2012 features a workshop on the campus of BSU, a community lecture and a juried exhibition of functional ceramics at the Bemidji Community Art Center selected by artist and potter Robert Briscoe. Previous jurors include: Guillermo Cueller, Simon Levin, Richard Bresnahan, Linda Christianson, Jeff Oestreich, Robert Briscoe, Bill Gossman and Bob and Cheryl Husby.
2012 Juror – Robert Briscoe
Robert Briscoe lives in rural Harris, Minnesota and has been a potter for over 40 years making functional stoneware. His work is collected throughout North America. Selected collections include the Weisman Museum of Art, Minneapolis MN, The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, the Racine Art Museum, Racine WI, the Margaret Harlow Collection, at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, MN, The Sid Swidler Collection at the Crocker Museum, Sacramento, CA The Coleen and Dennis Bindley Collection.
Briscoe has exhibited in numerous one-person shows, group exhibitions, and at art festivals such as the Smithsonian Craft Fair, The Kansas City Plaza Art Fair, The American Craft Expo, the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, the Philadelphia Craft Fair, as well as the Washington Craft Show.
Some of his awards include 2011 McKnight East Central Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, 2001, and 2006 McKnight Fellowships; Awards of Excellence from the Clay National Exhibition, Penn State University, State College, PA, and ceramics awards at the Winter Park Festival of Art, Winter Park, FL, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Denver CO, The Founders award at the American Craft Expo, Evanston, IL, The Collectors Award at the Washington Craft Show, Washington DC, and the Jerome Foundation Award, St. Paul, MN .
He regularly teaches workshops throughout the US and Canada, and in 2008 for the Irish National Craft Council in Thomastown, Ireland.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1947, Robert graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Economics. Studied Ceramics there with Angelo Garzio. Apprenticed with James Vandergriff of Zarah, Kansas in 1967, and Lou and Al Wynne of Black Forest, Colorado in 1968.

IOC 2012 JURIED COMPETITION & EXHIBIT
The IOC 2012 exhibit is a juried competition focusing on, and dedicated to, functional ceramics. Selected works will be a part of the exhibit at Watermark from November 2nd to December 22nd, 2012. The opening reception will be on Friday, Nov. 2nd from 5 to 7pm with a brief talk and announcement of awards by Butch Holden. Prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners equaling $1,600.00 and additional purchase awards for work going towards the Margaret Harlow Vessel Collection at BSU.

- Deadline for submissions: all IOC 2012 Exhibit Application must be complete and postmarked September 5th, 2012.
- Application fee: $30.00 for 3 entries.
- Exhibition Dates: November 2nd through December 22nd, 2012.
- Opening Reception and Awards: November 2nd from5 to 7 pm.
Awards In 2012 there will be prize money for 1st place $800.00, 2nd place$500.00 and 3rd place $300.00 plus additional purchase awards will be made with work going towards the Margaret Harlow Vessel Collection at BSU
