On May 18, Watermark will be offering a class on the art of Saami bracelet making. The Scandinavian tradition honors the Saami culture, the Indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia, and the intricate and ornate leather cuffs they wore.
During this beginner’s course, students learn to weave a traditional double braid bracelet and are taught to sew the braid and button to real leather. No sewing experience is needed to take the class, and students will have a comfortable 4 hours to learn and complete the piece.
The bracelets are a weave of “Tenntråd,” a pewter and silver thread made in Sweden, as well as Reindeer leather and Reindeer antler buttons from the Arctic Laplands. All materials used in the class are imported directly from Sweden. Students choose from a variety of Reindeer leathers for their bracelet.
In addition to the class fee, a $20 material fee is due to the instructor at the beginning of class. Additional kits will be available for purchase after the course.
