Birch Bark & Quill Techniques

Penny Kagigebi and assistant Chewie Mason will teach birch bark and porcupine quill techniques as used by woodland people.
Plan for our time:
• Introduction to quill boxes, embellished basketry and artist talk.
• Making small birch bark basket over the two weeks
• Participants will learn basic skills for porcupine quillwork and appliquéd beadwork on birchbark.
• Will include a small tool kit and basket pattern for students to retain.
Penny Kagigebi biography
A Queer2-Spirit artist & White Earth Ojibwe direct descendant, Penny Kagigebi works with the endangered artforms of porcupine quillwork and birchbark basketry. In 2014 she learned quillwork and quillbox construction from renown Ojibwe artist Mel Losh.
Since 2018 Penny’s quill boxes and baskets have been exhibited in Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Penny has been awarded grants from Region 2 Arts Council Anishinaabe Arts Initiative, Lake Region Arts Council, and Minnesota State Arts Board. She is a 2022-24 Springboard for the Arts Rural Regenerator Fellow, 2022-24 Minnesota Rural Urban Exchange Connector, 2023 First Peoples Fund Cultural Capital Fellow, and 2024-25 Emerging Curators Initiative Fellow.
