Bead and Birch Bark basket. A small basket made with the white side of the bark to the out side. A collar is stitched to the upper lip with zigzag deep red stitching. A decorative panel of bark (dark side visible is attached under the collar and decorated with 8 slanted porcupine quills and rainbow colored lengths of beads in between each quill.

Another about 3" x 4", decorated with pink ribbon and thread and a panel of porcupine quills and beads, A third twice as deep,4", done in blue thread and beading at the top and horizontal ribbons of rainbow colors decorates the front and a white heart made of bugle beads is sewn on top of the rainbow colored ribbons. There are four other baskets on the table but we are unable to see their decoration.

Birch Bark & Quill Techniques (2 weeks)
ATTEND BOTH: Wednesdays, October 9 & 16  from 12 to 4pm

Penny Kagigebi and assistant Chewie Mason will teach birch bark and porcupine quill techniques as used by woodland people.

Plan for our time:
• Introduction to quill boxes, embellished basketry and artist talk.
• Making small birch bark basket over the two weeks
• Participants will learn basic skills for porcupine quillwork and appliquéd beadwork on birchbark.
• Will include a small tool kit and basket pattern for students to retain.

Penny Kagigebi biography

A Queer2-Spirit artist & White Earth Ojibwe direct descendant, Penny Kagigebi works with the endangered artforms of porcupine quillwork and birchbark basketry. In 2014 she learned quillwork and quillbox construction from renown Ojibwe artist Mel Losh.
Since 2018 Penny’s quill boxes and baskets have been exhibited in Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Penny has been awarded grants from Region 2 Arts Council Anishinaabe Arts Initiative, Lake Region Arts Council, and Minnesota State Arts Board. She is a 2022-24 Springboard for the Arts Rural Regenerator Fellow, 2022-24 Minnesota Rural Urban Exchange Connector, 2023 First Peoples Fund Cultural Capital Fellow, and 2024-25 Emerging Curators Initiative Fellow.
A Queer2-Spirit advocate & activist, Penny was a Native American Community Development Institute 2024 “Pride is Indigenous” invited blog contributor (Minneapolis MN).
