WORKSHOP March 10 – 12, 2026: Revelations in Rep Weave Workshop With Master Weaver and Teacher, Kelly Marshall

Over time, weaving has transformed from being a basic necessity—essential for warmth and protection—into an expressive art form and a powerful means of building community. The art form serves a dual purpose: while it preserves heritage and traditions, it also encourages innovation by adapting new techniques and ideas. This dynamic process connects generations, allowing individuals to share skills and stories that span time.

When an artist is also a weaver, their deep understanding of fibers, textures, colors, and practical uses creates a unique interaction within their work. This combination of knowledge and skill results in fabrics that embody both function and artistic expression, offering a distinct perspective that cannot be found elsewhere.

When weaving, finding a rhythm with the shuttle, beater, and treadles creates a meditative pause. Time slows, the small and big worries of the day fall away, and we are no longer separate, focused on our own perceptions, but part of a greater whole. Although we are working, we are also at rest.

The Bemidji Area Weavers Guild (BAWG) was started by weavers eager to share their enthusiasm and expertise in fiber arts. By coming together and practicing as a group, BAWG has created a sense of belonging, developed members’ skills, and united a weaving community in Northern Minnesota. Events like workshops, social gatherings, and exhibitions provide opportunities for BAWG members to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and build stronger social connections, all while enriching the region’s cultural scene.
