Weaving Our Community – Art as a conversation
We have been so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with artists and Leech Lake Ojibwe Band members Michelle Marion and Jeff Harper over the last several months. Their remarkable talent and true generosity provided many community members an opportunity to learn and grow as weavers and as artists.
We were able to conduct workshop sessions in several traditional Anishinaabe weaving and basket making techniques. They were lively experiences where quality work was accomplished by Ojibwe community members and some of their neighbors.
In this exhibit are works by Miikanan Gallery workshop participants, instructors, and group projects led by the instructors at other locations. The caliber of the work in this exhibit reflects on the commitment of the instructors and the talent and interest of those participating in the workshops.
One of our goals at Miikanan Gallery is to support the perpetuation of traditional Ojibwe art practices. We also seek to educate others to understand the value and quality of the work Ojibwe people have been practicing for centuries. We have full intention of continuing to provide this kind of programming in the future. And we look forward to new and enduring results. Please enjoy the wonderful results of community building though art.
