Description
Intercultural Creative Circles: Birch Bark Makak
No fee. Materials included.
Attend BOTH days: Wednesday & Thursday December 4 & 5 from 4 to 7pm
Join Michelle Marion (Anishinaabe and Akimell O’Otham) to make a small makak (basket) from birch bark and split spruce-root lacing. Birch bark is an integral part to Anishinaabe life. Birch can be harvested at different times in the year. In this class participants will make a small makak (basket). Begin by splitting spruce roots to use as lacing, then, bend and lace the bark to make a small makak. Finally, complete the basket with a rim and spruce root lacing.
Call Watermark to register 218-444-7570. Because the Intercultural Creative Circles fill up quickly, callers who speak DIRECTLY with a receptionist during regular hours are guaranteed a place on our registration list or waiting list. FB, IG or voice messaging is not recommended.
Michelle Marion lives in Cass Lake with her family. Taught by family members and local artists she has been learning how to make a variety of baskets for ten years. She continues to learn all that she can. Michelle enjoys harvesting with family, weaving, carving, gardening, and dancing.
