Gillian Bedford – Plein Air Landscape Artist
Painting in the style of “plein air,” Bedford leaves the studio behind in exchange for natural light where she can experience transitions found in the outside world. She paints plein air the lakes, bogs and trees that create the landscapes of northern Minnesota.
Panel Discussion: Rights of the Child
ARCHIVED ONLINE. In conjunction with multidisciplinary artist Moira Villiard’s Exhibit “Rights of the Child” Watermark Art Center will hold a panel discussion regarding the rights and policies implemented by governments that invest in child development such as health care, nutrition and stronger safeguards intended to protect children from violence and exploitation.
Thirteen: Nonconformity – Alice Blessing
Artist’s Talk March 26, 2 – 4pm. Exhibit: Extended to March 26. With her newest series of bold and bright portraits of children, Alice Blessing journeys through the developmental consequences of patriarchy and systematic oppression. Originally exploring feminism and puberty, Blessing’s deeply personal concept evolved to address intersectionality, gender and diversity.
Dakobijige “She Ties Things Together” – Maggie Thompson
Exhibit extended to November 30, 2021. Maggie Thompson derives her inspiration from the history of her Ojibwe heritage, exploring family history as well as themes and subject matter of the broader Native American experience.
Abstractions x Four – Charles Alberti
Reception: Oct 1, 5-7pm. Exhibit: October 1 – November 27, 2021. This exhibit is the outgrowth of a recently published chapbook sharing his life as an artist. By focusing on abstract concepts, Alberti says he has let color dominate and control his expressions with color becoming the tool of investigation and discovery.
Author Wendell Affield Book Launch
November 19, 6pm Book Signing & Reading. It’s one thing to write a book; it’s another to live it. Wendell Affield never knew his father. His childhood was punctuated by a volatile mother and an unpredictable stepfather. Barbara, Uncharted Course Through Borderline Personality Disorder is the culmination of a decade of research and interviews with mental health professionals as Affield learns to understand and appreciate the woman who haunted his childhood.
Open Community Art Workshop
Workshop August 29. Through the exploration and use of unconventional materials students will create their own small textile piece that will be put on exhibit in the Watermark. Students will be challenged to rethink what can be used to create textiles by bringing in their own found materials or to use ones provided by the gallery such as zip ties, pipe cleaners, film strips, wire etc.
Reflections of Northern Minnesota – Lowell Wolff
Presentation September 16 6pm. Exhibit July 2 – Sep 25, 2021: The word “reflection” can describe a contemplative mental state or the mirroring of light, particularly the reflection off water – a centerpiece of northern Minnesota identity. One hopes that the exhibit illustrates the fusion of both meanings into the viewer’s experience creating visual artistry through a lens.
